The End of the "Passport Loophole": New EU Pet Travel Rules (April 2026)
Travelling with your furry family members just got a bit more complicated for those living in Great Britain. As of 22 April 2026, the European Union has officially tightened the rules for pet travel from the UK, ending a long-standing "loophole" that many frequent travellers relied on.
At Exec Pets Ltd, we know how much your pets mean to you. Whether you're heading to a holiday home in France or relocating to Spain, staying on top of these changes is vital to ensure your journey is smooth and stress-free.
What Has Changed?
The biggest shift involves EU-issued pet passports. Previously, many UK residents used passports issued in EU member states (like Ireland, Spain, or France) to travel back and forth without needing new paperwork for every trip.
Passports No Longer Valid for GB Residents: If you live in England, Scotland, or Wales, you can no longer use an EU pet passport to enter the EU from Great Britain.
Residency Matters: EU pet passports are now strictly reserved for people whose permanent, primary residence is within the EU. Even if your pet has a passport issued years ago, border officials are now required to check your residency status.
Mandatory Animal Health Certificate (AHC): Every single trip from GB to the EU now requires a fresh Animal Health Certificate issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).
The Animal Health Certificate (AHC) Checklist
Since the AHC is now the "golden ticket" for UK residents, here is what you need to know for 2026:
Single-Use Only: Unlike a passport, a new AHC is required for every trip you take from Great Britain to the EU.
The 10-Day Window: You must visit an Official Veterinarian (OV) to have the AHC issued within 10 days of your departure date.
Validity Once Issued: Once you enter the EU, the certificate is valid for 4 to 6 months for onward travel within the EU and for your return trip to Great Britain.
Rabies Requirements: Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination and be microchipped. If it's a primary vaccination, you must wait 21 days after the jab before the AHC can be issued.
Five-Pet Limit: There is now a strict limit of five pets per private vehicle (rather than per person) to prevent commercial sales under the guise of pet travel.
